Nordic World Closes Raft of Format Deals in Germany

RTL, Disney, and ZDFto reversion four Nordic World/Absolutely Independent formats

Nordic World, the programme sales alliance established and owned by TV2 Norway and TV4 Sweden, reports that it has signed four format deals in Germany from the combined Nordic World/Absolutely Independent catalogue. The deals were brokered via Nordic World’s newly opened sales office in Budapest, headed by Emese Acs, director of sales and acquisitions for CEE, CIS, the German-speaking territories, the Middle East, Turkey and Asia, including China.


RTL has acquired two formats: Nordic World’s award-winning comedy Hotel Zimmerfrei and Absolutely Independent’s 50-minute primetime reality show Family Dinner. Hotel Zimmerfrei, billed as Schillerstrasse meets Fawlty Towers, will be reversioned for Germany by Eyeworks in co-operation with HPR B&T. The Immergut format, which mixes physical and verbal comedy with improvisation and a surreal sitcom storyline, has also been licenced by China’s Shixi TT. The German commercial TV giant has also commissioned a pilot episode of SkyHigh’s Family Dinner, which aims to re-unite warring family members over a conciliatory gourmet meal.


Disney Germany has licensed Nordic World’s 100 Days of Being Nice, devised by Denmark’s hit-generating format shop Gong. To be produced in Germany by FremantleMedia’s UFA Show & Factual, the six-episode cross-platform show sees a celebrity TV host attempt to re-introduce politeness to the nation through a series of events, media appearances and street campaigns.


In a fourth format deal, German public broadcaster ZDF has licensed Absolutely Independent’s Checkpoint and is set to launch a local version of the multi-award-winning children’s show in the third quarter. Created by Dutch public broadcaster EO, Checkpoint is heading into its ninth season on EO’s Zapp channel, where its mix of pseudo-science, light-hearted learning and good old-fashioned fun as made it a firm favourite with young Dutch audiences.


Jan Salling, Nordic World’s chief operating officer and director of sales, said: “The German television market is not only the largest TV market of Europe but one of the most fiercely competitive. To have closed four format deals with three of the territory’s most powerful broadcasters is a tribute to the strength and diversity of our catalogue — and solid proof that the merging of Nordic World and Absolutely Independent has created a powerful new player on the international formats market.”


In other German-related format news, Absolutely Independent’s In Search of God (10 x 25 mins), produced by Eye2Eye Media, was recently nominated for a Best Formats Award at the EUROVISION Creative Forum in Berlin. The primetime format, which is now entering its fifth season in the Netherlands, follows five non-Christian celebrities on a controversial, confrontational and often emotional journey in search of God.
