When 23-year-old Englishman William Slingsby, disembarked in 1872, his arrival marked the dawn of mountaineering and rock climbing as a sport in Norway.

Today William Slingsby is renowned as the first man to have scaled no fewer than 160 of the most formidable peaks in Norway. In climbing circles all over the country tales are still told of his fearlessness in the face of danger, incredible stamina and love of the Norwegian mountains. To this day he remains the idol of the Norwegian climbing community.

In this programme a TV team follows in Slingsby's footsteps on two day-long climbs to reach the summit of Norway's most renowned peak, Store Skagastøltind. For four long years Slingsby yearned to conquer this towering crag – “the castle of my dreams”, as he called it. When he finally did so, he did so alone.

We accompany a team comprising some of Norway's most experienced mountain climbers, one of whom, Bjørn Myrer Lund, a world-famous mountaineer in the 1980s, was the first Norwegian to ascend Mount Everest. Filming the Skagastøltind ascent proved a far more daunting task than had originally been envisaged.
