The manufacture of Omega-3 capsules has evolved into a highly lucrative industry throughout the western world, where we are constantly reminded of how important it is to take such capsules to keep fit and well. But whereas people in the affluent west consume the capsules for their health-giving properties, production of the fish oil from which they are made is proving detrimental to the life and environment of the Peruvian communities engaged in their production.

This documentary shows that children, in particular, are becoming increasingly subject to infections and lung ailments as a result of pollution emanating from nearby fish-oil plants. Over the years, pollution has wiped out marine life in the vicinity of the plants and thus destroyed the livelihood of local fishermen. Despite strict legislation and control the plants, in which western interests are heavily represented, continue to pollute without restraint. As the programme also demonstrates, the fish-oil industry is a powerful one, and it can be a dangerous adversary for anyone bold enough to oppose it.
