Architect Steven Holl relates how Knut Hamsun's writings prompted him to locate such an extraordinary building, skewed and with a spiked punk 'fringe', in an idyllic Norwegian setting.

Steven Holl is one of America's most renowned and innovative architects, and the winner of many outstanding awards. Of Norwegian descent, he is a great admirer of the Nobel laureate Knut Hamsun. Opened by HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit in August 2009, the Hamsun Centre on the island of Hamarøy, off Norway's north-west coast, is one of his most prestigious international achievements and a worthy runner-up to the Oslo Opera House. In this programme Steven Holl explains how Hamsun's works inspired him to place this controversial, strangely skewed building, with its spiked punk 'fringe', in the heart of northern Norway's rugged, unspoiled landscape.

The cornice is edged with 2,500 bamboo canes specially imported from China. Each 3.5 metres in length, according to the architect they are an allusion to the traditional turf and thatched roofs of rural Norway.
