On the night of January 10th 2004, in the small town of Knutby in Sweden, a young child minder killed the pastor’s wife. She shot her several times at point blank range. Shortly after, she tried to kill the husband of one of the pastor’s mistresses with a pistol shot to the head. In her testimony she later revealed that she had been led to commit these crimes, being brain-washed with biblical quotes and text messages to her phone. The one who led her was none other than her spiritual leader and her lover: the pastor himself.

After the shootings, the police and the media soon uncovered what turned out to be a real life whodunit. It contains all the classic ingredients of a murder story: a charismatic pastor and his women, a controversial charismatic religious congregation, lies and infidelity, powerful and twisted relationships. The pastor was sentenced to life for conspiring to commit murder and attempted murder. The child minder was sentenced to be confined to a mental institution. In early 2005, the Swedish High Court confirmed the sentences. “A Fall From Grace” is the first documentary to be produced about the crimes in Knutby. For a full year, the film team followed the congregation that is controversial for its dogma and harsh internal rule. In this film, the people involved talk about the events, giving the viewer an insight into an extremist interpretation of the Bible and the fundamentalist spirituality of the Knutby congregation.
