London/Oslo/Amsterdam, December 15, 2015:
Nordic World reports that Eye2Eye Media’s mass pop-cultural event The Passion has been commissioned by US broadcast network FOX to air at March 20, 2016. The annual multimedia spectacle has also been optioned and is now in development with major German and Norwegian broadcasters, the details of which will be announced shortly.
The deals follow The Passion’s phenomenal success in the Netherlands, where it debuted in 2011 and has become the most successful live storytelling event ever to air on Dutch television. The TV show’s share has soared from 17.4% in 2011 to 46.2% in 2015. In the modern and powerful re-interpretation of the last hours of Jesus Christ, well-known singers, actors and celebrities retell the biblical story throughout different locations in the city and on a main city-centre stage, using secular pop songs and performance skills. Meanwhile, off-stage, a 1,000-strong public procession wends its way through the city, following a giant neon lit cross. The procession and performance come to a dramatic climax when the cross reaches the stage, and the conviction and death of Jesus is played out in front of crowds of 20,000 spectators and millions of viewers at home.
Eye2Eye Media’s executive producer and The Passion creator, Jacco Doornbos, said: “We are grateful and very excited that we are bringing this unique television event to audiences around the globe, starting with the US. The story of The Passion is one of the most powerful stories of mankind and it is an exciting challenge for us to be given the opportunity to translate this story about love, hate, betrayal, friendship, grief, hope and redemption to the here and now of American pop culture, in a way all viewers can identify with.”
Paulina Eklund, Nordic World’s vice-president of sales, said: “We believe The Passion will have as powerful an impact in the US as it has in the Netherlands. Every year since 2011, the event has attracted thousands of Dutch people to the streets and many more to their TV screens, entertained and moved by one of the world’s great stories. It not only delivers a powerful emotional and moral punch, but it also responds to the demand for live experiences that entice audiences to watch content in real-time. ”
In the Netherlands, The Passion has become a major cultural event, making headlines across the Dutch media and becoming a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
