Kristoffer Clausen is 34 years old. With only his dog for company, for almost a whole year he lived of what he could shoot, fish and forage. It was a formidable task he had set himself, and after three months he had lost 21 kg.

An accomplished hunter, angler and outdoorsman, Kristoffer found a challenge that was to test his skills to the utmost. With only his dog Froeya for company, for almost a whole year he lived of what he could shoot, fish and forage.

He was, of course, far better equipped than were the earliest Norwegians - though they never had to worry about hunting regulations. It was a formidable task he had set himself, and after three months he had lost 21 kg. But there is more to living off the land than just food: he had also to contend with the problems of loneliness, hygiene and weather. To add to his trials, that particular winter was one of the severest for a very long time.

You are welcome to try it for yourself. Dress warmly and make sure to pack extra clothes and a waterproof sheet. Take with you an axe, knife, shotgun, rifle, ammunition, fishing-rod and a few lures - but no food, not even butter or salt. Make your way deep into the woods and face the fact that this will be your home for a whole year. Then see how long you can keep going . . .
