Edvard Munch’s world famous paintings ”The Scream” and ”Madonna” were stolen from the Munch Museum in Oslo at 11 am on Aug. 22nd, 2004. After being astray for two years they were returned to the police - severely damaged.

The documentary follows the difficult process of restoring the two paintings before they again are to be presented on the walls of the Munch Museum.

At the same time it tells the intriguing story of these two paintings by getting inside Munch’s state of mind while creating what he called ”The Frieze of Life”. “The Scream” and “Madonna” renewed art history, but were at the time met with fierce resistance.

Last, but not least the documentary tells the fascinating story of a theft to be known worldwide. In fact a cover up for another crime - today the reason why the paintings are being restored.
